Help the Magduman

The winnowing of Duman in Santa Monica Sta. Rita

The Magduman community works hard to ensure that they can sow the duman seeds each year so they may look forward to a harvest during the holiday season, which has always been a part of their lives. Yet, a significant portion of these community members, particularly the culture-bearers, still fall within the government’s 4Ps program, making them members of the marginalized class. In order to operate the seed planting, they actually borrow money from banks or pawnshops at high interest rates to cover the operation, which they anticipate to pay back as soon as the duman product is sold after harvest.

To ensure the viability of this intangible cultural heritage, these culture-bearers require a long-term solution to their financial problems. The necessity for this is urgent for the magduman since they intend to begin seed transplantation as soon as the summer season is through.

Among other things, like social and environmental factors, the economic factor of poverty is one of the main reasons why the ICH could vanish. An urgent safeguarding is needed to ensure its viability.
